Once taken, collagen is digested in the stomach and the first sections of the intestine. Specific digestive enzymes then break it down into individual amino acids and very small protein fragments, which are absorbed by the intestine.

From the intestine, these “protein fragments” are carried by the blood to the sites where they are used metabolically. In the skin, some of these peptides, known as bioactive collagen peptides , are taken up by specialised cells called fibroblasts. Stimulated by these peptides, fibroblasts increase the synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

The effectiveness of collagen appears to depend mainly on its content of bioactive peptides.

At industrial level, the collagen protein chain can be split at precise points to generate a high content of bioactive peptides that resist digestion and are already available for absorption. By contrast, during human digestion the collagen protein chain is split at “random” points, producing a smaller amount of these bioactive peptides.

The animal from which collagen is extracted appears to be of marginal importance, as collagen from different sources, such as bovine, porcine and poultry, has shown benefits in clinical studies.

Plant collagen does not exist.

Extracts of certain gelling algae, such as agar-agar, are improperly called plant collagen. They are actually protein-free and consist of polysaccharides. This product is entirely different from animal collagen and does not contain the amino acids required for collagen synthesis in the human body; it is therefore completely ineffective as an anti-wrinkle supplement.

Plant-derived amino-acid blends that mimic the composition of collagen nevertheless have limited benefits, because these amino acids are not present in the bioactive di- and tripeptide form required to stimulate fibroblasts.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PLANT COLLAGEN: Collagen is a typically animal protein and is absent from the plant kingdom. What is commonly and improperly called “plant collagen” is actually a mixture of fibrous and gelling substances extracted from certain algae. The classic example is agar-agar, which is used instead of animal gelatine in vegan recipes. Regardless of its origin, plant collagen offers no direct benefit to our skin because it is a completely different substance from animal collagen.

The composition and functional purpose of the two formulas also differ: the active ingredients in the vials act mainly as powerful natural antioxidants, while those in the sachets nourish and support skin trophism.

Take the contents of one vial in the morning, immediately before breakfast, and one sachet in the evening, shortly before bedtime or immediately before dinner.
